Job Description:

Build the software that coordinates solar panels, batteries, electric vehicles, and heat pumps as one connected energy system.

Product Engineer - Ghent

Ghent, Belgium · Full-time · Hybrid

What you'd actually work on

  • Owning product development from the initial customer problem through design, implementation, release, and iteration
  • Working directly with customers to understand how energy suppliers manage distributed energy assets
  • Deciding what should be built based on customer impact, technical complexity, and delivery effort
  • Building product features across Python, TypeScript, SQL, APIs, and data integrations
  • Acting as the technical point of contact for one or more customers during implementation and ongoing use
  • Turning recurring customer implementation requirements into reusable product capabilities
  • Integrating solar panels, batteries, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and other distributed energy resources
  • Building and maintaining real-time services used within operational energy environments
  • Improving the correctness, resilience, observability, and availability of production systems
  • Using AI and agentic development tools where they improve engineering speed or reduce repetitive work
  • Reviewing AI-generated output and deciding when it is reliable enough for production
  • Communicating product decisions, technical constraints, and delivery progress clearly
  • Working directly with the founders in a small engineering and product team

Where it gets technically interesting

  • Coordinating large numbers of distributed energy devices as a single operational system
  • Integrating devices and external platforms with different APIs, data formats, and operating constraints
  • Maintaining a reliable source of truth across real-time device and energy data
  • Building software used to support grid stability and electricity cost optimisation
  • Making product decisions when customer requirements, technical constraints, and energy-market rules intersect
  • Turning customer-specific implementation work into maintainable product functionality
  • Operating real-time systems where incorrect or delayed data can affect physical energy assets
  • Using AI-assisted engineering without compromising architecture, correctness, security, or maintainability
  • Keeping delivery fast while the product, customer base, and underlying platform continue to evolve

What we're looking for

  • A strong software engineering background and a record of shipping production software
  • Experience owning a feature or product area beyond implementation alone
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, APIs, and data integration
  • Experience with Python, TypeScript, SQL, or comparable production technologies
  • The ability to work across different parts of a product and technical stack
  • Confidence speaking directly with customers and understanding the problem behind a request
  • Product judgement and the ability to challenge requirements, prioritise impact, and reduce scope when necessary
  • Experience building reliable systems and investigating production issues
  • Practical use of AI or agentic tools within an engineering workflow
  • The judgement to review, test, and challenge AI-generated output
  • Clear written and spoken communication
  • Professional English
  • Based in Europe and able to work regularly from the Ghent office

The role is open to mid-level and senior engineers. The quality and ownership of the products you have built matter more than a specific number of years of experience.

The company

A Ghent-based energy technology start-up developing orchestration software for energy suppliers.

Its platform connects decentralised energy assets, including solar panels, batteries, electric vehicles, and heat pumps, allowing them to be monitored and coordinated as one system. Energy suppliers use the platform to integrate and manage assets across their customer base.

The company is growing its product and engineering capabilities as distributed energy places increasing operational demands on European electricity grids.

Competitive salary, hybrid working, a high level of autonomy, and regular collaboration from the company's Ghent headquarters.
